Between 1910 and 1936, several thousand residents were housed in different centers associated with the Residencia (university students, women, boys and girls). There is information about some 1,500 of them. They came mainly from professional middle-class families from all regions of the country, with a certain predominance of residents from Andalusia, Asturias, the Basque country, Navarre, and Leon. The Residencia sought to maintain a balance between the disciplines that the residents studied, but medical students, attracted by the fame of their laboratories, were the most numerous, followed by students of Engineering, Architecture, Pharmacy, and Law. Although the Residencia is known internationally by the names of some outstanding figures, artists of various fields and scientists, one can say that, in general, residents formed a group of brilliant professionals in many different areas: physicians, architects, engineers, business men and women, physicists, chemists and mathematicians.
