Concha Méndez joins her husband in Paris, and they go into exile in Havana. There, they found the printing press La Verónica and publish books of poetry, plays, novels and essays. The couple gets to know many of the intellectuals and artists on the island, but they especially befriend painters Mario Carreño and Carlos Enríquez, and gallery owner María Luisa Gómez Mena. They print the journal Nuestra España for the Spanish exiles in Cuba, and also collaborate with Espuela de Plata, Lyceum, Ultra and Universidad de La Habana. Altolaguirre publishes Nube temporal (1939), the journal Atentamente (1940) and a new version of La lenta libertad (1942). He and his wife print six issues of the journal La Verónica (1942).
