The Junta para Ampliación de Estudios e Investigaciones Científicas (JAE) was the institution that carried out the main project of modernization in science in early 20th century in Spain. Inspired by the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, and directed by Santiago Ramón y Cajal until his death in 1934, the Junta established an institutional support system for research and educational reform. Among its functions, there were granting fellowships to individuals or groups to study abroad; the appointment of delegations to conventions, the establishment of international scientific and cultural relations, the building of research centers and educational facilities, and the management of a publications department.
The exhibition El laboratorio de España. La Junta para Ampliación de Estudios e Investigaciones Científicas (1907-1939), its catalog, and an international conference are among the celebrations to commemorate its centenary.
